The development of low-carbon technologies in the cement industry is essential for reducing CO2 emissions. A team of research engineers at the University of Cambridge, UK, has developed a cost-effective method for producing low-carbon concrete using waste cement. After a building is demolished, the waste concrete is crushed to separate the cement from the aggregates. The recovered cement is then transported to a steel furnace, where it substitutes for lime as “flux,” a cleaning agent used to remove impurities from molten metal during the recycling process.

Advances in robotic surgical systems are becoming a prominent trend in hospital operating rooms. One of the latest innovations comes from a collaboration between researchers at Universidad Carlos III in Madrid, Spain, and the robotics manufacturer Robotnik. Together, they have developed an indoor mobile robot— the Autonomous Domestic Ambidextrous Manipulator (ADAM)—designed to assist the elderly with basic daily tasks.
