Check the fuzziness of the tip— less fuzz signals better sweetness. Gently squeeze the chestnut. If it’s firm and solid, then you know it’s fresh inside. Don’t pick any with black patches, holes, dull shells, or odd smells, since this usually means it has been infested with insects, mold, or that the kernels are spoiled.
