To care for your washer, leave the door open 3–5 cm for 30–60 minutes after each cycle to let air circulate and prevent mold and damage. Closing the door while it’s still damp traps moisture, creating perfect conditions for mold, bacteria, and odors. This matters even more for front-loaders, where water collects around the gasket and detergent tray. But the door should be shut when the area is dusty or if kids or animal-residents are nearby. Routine cleaning, avoiding leaving wet clothes inside, drying both the gasket and detergent drawer, and setting the machine in a dry, well-ventilated location all help maintain maximal performance. Wipe the door and gasket dry each time after use so hair and lint don’t block the seal. Furthermore, both should be cleaned at least once monthly, otherwise there could be leaking from the washer door. To clean the door and gasket, dilute 180 milliliters (3/4 cup) of bleach with 4 liters (1 gallon) of warm water. You may use vinegar instead but never mix it with bleach. Wearing gloves, take a cloth and the cleaning solution and cleanse the surface of the door gasket. Make sure you pull the gasket lip back and clean beneath it as well. Then clean the inside of the door, especially the bottom where lint and residue collect.
