Avocado peels contain minerals, such as potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc. Sandy and very acidic soils are more likely to lack calcium and magnesium, while alkaline soils can often be low in iron, which may cause plants to develop yellowing leaves. Because avocado peels are very fibrous, they take a long time to break down. To speed up the process, chop them into small pieces or blend them with a little water before adding them to your compost pile. If pieces remain when your compost is ready, simply screen them out and add them to your next batch to continue breaking down.
