Today, Dr. Klem continues to share his research with us. He explains how some people are already implementing ways to prevent our avian friends from flying into buildings. “You can get tapes that can have decals on them, of any shape and size, and any kind of creative element that you can see. People can find it – “Acopian Bird Savers” is their name.” “There’s also the prospect of producing invisible markers to humans, but visible to birds, using ultraviolet light, and I have studied that. These ultraviolet signals will reduce the risk of a collision by 50 to 70%, for example. But the visual markers that you and I and the birds can see, that can reduce the collisions by 95 to a hundred percent.” “Guardian and Walker in particular, have committed to making glass with these ultraviolet signals in addition to patterning that birds and humans can see.”

Dr. Daniel Klem Jr. has found that certain patterns are more effective at informing bird-folks of the windows’ presence. Dr. Klem explains how a small pattern, covering as little as 7% of the window, can save many lives. Dr. Klem explores the roles that individuals, organizations, and governments can play in mitigating bird-people colliding with windows and outlines steps to promote bird-folk-friendly environments. “Number one, become familiar with the issue and the fundamentals. Become ambassadors or advocates, and share information.” “The other big thing is to ask people to be mindful of their legislators.” “And the other thing not to ignore is exactly the opportunity that you’re giving me today. The media are so important.”
