Torre Washington (vegan): Redefining the Strength of Compassion, Part 2 of 2

Competitive bodybuilding involves not just someone that goes into the gym and trains and works out to shape their body to a specific form that they want. When you are a competitor, you are going on stage, presenting your physique in the leanest, most muscle and best symmetry you can have. For example, if you’re training your shoulders, you’re training your biceps; you want them to stand out to a p

I got more into my culture of Rastafari and learning about the Rastafarian lifestyle. And from the Rastafarian lifestyle, I learned that they typically eat from the ground, from nature; nature provides. The way Rasta ate, was ital. Ital is the natural way of living, meaning we don’t consume any animal flesh or secretions. And once I learned that, I started doing that.

I tell people about how if everyone went plant-based, how we could give back to nature, it’s something like 80% of the farmland and, we could just kind of rewild it for the animals and the trees and nature and how wonderful that would be.

I think there’s more to people than just what they consume, but obviously it’s a big part of who people are and how they show up in life. There’s a whole network of millions of cells and neurons that lie between here and here that create the quality of your future life, and those all work in concert with everything you consume. So it’s obviously a big part of who you are, what you choose to consum

I couldn’t have imagined, having had the career that I had across multiple sports, being able to play in 23 countries. I got to play in every continent at least once, and from my vantage point, my consumption choices (vegan diet) were a direct result of my internal consecration, and then those choices allowed me to have a one-of-one career.

My choices on my plate weren’t reflecting who I really was and what my values were. And those were compassion and to see justice and peace in the world. And when our food choices are not reflecting that, we’re in a constant battle. So for me, veganism was the next step. Of course, it’s been the best decision of my life to know that I’m contributing less to animal suffering of any kind makes me fee

Growing up was challenging because I went to an all-girls school with over a thousand girls, and they, I remember going into Christian Studies, and they actually prayed for me because they said it was anti-biblical to be plant-based, like it was against the principles of the Bible. And it was really challenging, and I think that’s where sport came in for me. I wanted to show them that actually you

I have fallen in a couple of races that have been crowded, and there were speed bumps I didn’t see, kind of thing, because I’m looking ahead. And people who saw my physical injury, which is blood gushing out, said, “Wow, you should have broken something if you had osteoporosis.” I mean, that’s another thing that if you do it right, get plenty of sunshine, do weight training, you just don’t have os

I wrote “Eat Vegan on $4 a Day” after watching too many news stories that said you can’t eat well on a budget. There was this one particular story of a woman who was morbidly obese, loading up her cart with Twinkies and macaroni and cheese and as I say in the book, the Twinkies made me do it. She was being interviewed, and she goes, “You just can’t eat well on a budget.”

My relationship with food before being vegan was not at all healthy. I was very restrictive with what I was eating, constantly worried about my weight. I would count calories. I’d measure out food. I had a very unhealthy relationship with food because I was worried [that] everything I put in my mouth is going to make me put on weight. I didn’t eat hardly any carbohydrates. I didn’t feel good at al

Before I was vegan, I would go into the gym and do little workouts. I thought I was doing really well, I didn’t want to push myself. I felt like the gym was something I had to do and go and get through to be healthy. After I switched to a vegan diet, I noticed much more energy in my workouts. I noticed my body started changing. I started getting more muscly, looking more toned, and being stronger.

That’s how we came up with the idea for the first PlantBuilt in 2013. Robert Cheeke was involved, and it was Marcella and I from Vegan Muscle Fitness. And it was Giacomo and Dani from Vegan Proteins. We kind of assembled this with several other people, and we flew out to Austin, Texas, and competed in the Naturally Fit Super Show, which is a bodybuilding and multi-sport event there in the summer.

One of the keys that I have discovered to be fundamental for longevity – for being vital, alert, and in good physical and mental shape – is compassion. I have begun to see veganism as a tool for conscious longevity.

And the epiphany I had there was that if my body starts rejecting and not processing these foods well, that quickly after just 30 days, how could they be good for me? If I took 30 days without eating a banana or some other h

It’s a big misconception that you have to eat animal products. I think just looking at the amount of vegan athletes or largely plant-based athletes that are around now, that’s evidence enough, in my opinion, that you don’t need to eat animal products to be successful.

It’s a huge misconception that people think that vegans don’t have anything to eat. There is basically an alternative for anything that you would want that was non-vegan. You could definitely make it vegan. I definitely do not have a shortage of food. I eat so much food, and it's all plant-based and vegan.

In one word, I would describe surfing as freedom. When you step into the ocean and catch a wave, it's almost like an empty canvas for you to paint the picture however you like. So, you have the freedom and space to be creative with your movement and whatever you want to do.
