How can cruelty to animal-people be documented, yet those responsible avoid prosecution? Gail A. Eisnitz takes us behind her legal battles against factory farms and slaughterhouses, exposes loopholes surrounding “depopulation,” and reveals what keeps her fighting for animal-people after more than 40 years. “I’ve documented all sorts of violations. But every time I documented a violation, law enforcement or the US Secretary of Agriculture or somebody would make sure that it wasn’t prosecuted. In the case in Florida, where the cows were having their heads skinned while they were still fully conscious, we brought a case against the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). And of course, his report said it was a wonderful plant.”

Gail explains that one of the biggest legislative “loopholes” is that livestock factories can legally kill animal-people inhumanely because the methods used are considered “standard agricultural practices.” “There are also exemptions for ‘standard agricultural practices.’” “And so, the most common form of depopulation is called ventilation shutdown plus. So the animals just bake to death. I think it’s probably about 185 or 190 million poultry that have been killed because of avian influenza since 2022, (they) have been killed by ventilation shutdown plus.”

Recently, Gail completed her second book, “Out of Sight: An Undercover Investigator’s Fight for Animal Rights and her own Survival.” The book is a memoir chronicling of her life as she conducts difficult undercover investigations while coping with a challenging visual impairment. “Just when things weren’t looking so good, something would happen and things would look better. I believe in a power greater than myself, so, I just don’t have to do it (all) myself.”
