Across our world, remarkable moments continue to unfold – events that quietly appear, then vanish, leaving questions, wonder, and reflection in their wake. From unexpected sights in the sky to rare natural occurrences witnessed by ordinary people, these moments remind us that the world still holds many surprises.

In this multipart series, The Phenomena Files: Curious Tales from Across the Globe, we explore real-life accounts of unusual and awe-inspiring events, as seen, shared, and remembered. Some are easily explained, others invite deeper contemplation, and all encourage us to slow down and observe the extraordinary woven into everyday life.

We begin the first episode by exploring rare and mysterious events in the skies.

One of nature’s most dazzling spectacles is the iridescent cloud, which can sometimes form rainbow-like staircases, such as those recently observed over Hong Kong and in various locations in Âu Lạc (Vietnam). Scientifically, these clouds form when sunlight passes through tiny water droplets or ice crystals, diffracting the light into brilliant, shifting colors.

Though uncommon, these clouds inspire wonder and spiritual reflection. In Âu Lạc (Vietnam), they have appeared during Buddha’s birthday celebrations at Thanh Tâm Pagoda, Bà Ðen Mountain, and Trúc Lâm Zen Monastery in Phú Yên. Buddhists consider these vibrant skies auspicious signs, often coinciding with the enshrinement of sacred relics and moments of devoted practice. Witnesses describe feelings of awe and serenity, seeing the clouds as a visible connection between benevolent human hearts and the Buddha’s compassion.

Across cultures, rainbow clouds symbolize hope, Divine presence, inspiration, and joy. They invite us to pause, reflect, and marvel at the beauty of our world. Whether seen through the lens of science or spirit, these luminous clouds remind us that the skies are alive with wonder, visible to every heart willing to look up with gratitude, reverence, and delight.

From the rainbow skies above, we now descend to the misty peaks of Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina, where another rare and magical sky phenomenon awaits: the Brocken specter. Just as iridescent clouds remind us of the beauty and mystery of light, the Brocken specter transforms fog into a stage for shadows and color. Local photographer Leslie Restivo captured this extraordinary event, which occurs when a person’s shadow is cast onto a bank of fog as the sun rises or sets. When sunlight strikes the water droplets in the cloud at the perfect angle, a glowing halo – called a glory – appears around the shadow, creating a surreal, almost otherworldly vision.

Although its name originates from Germany’s Brocken Mountain, this spectacle can appear anywhere with the right combination of mist and sunlight. Over the years, Restivo has seen it many times at Grandfather Mountain, where shifting elevations and clouds reveal a constantly changing natural canvas.

We now turn our attention to Kathmandu, Nepal, where the morning sky revealed another rare sight: a sundog, also called a parhelion. On October 27, 2025, a vertical streak of rainbow-colored light appeared beside the rising sun, dazzling observers with its brilliance. While it may resemble a rainbow, this phenomenon is caused by sunlight refracting and reflecting through tiny hexagonal ice crystals suspended in high-altitude cirrus clouds. When light bends at about 22 degrees, these luminous spots, sometimes accompanied by a vertical light pillar, appear beside the Sun.

Sundogs are most visible at sunrise or sunset, when the Sun is low on the horizon, and they do not predict weather changes. The term “sundog” is rooted in ancient mythology, evoking Zeus’ celestial dog-folk that accompany the Sun across the sky. Like iridescent clouds and the Brocken specter, sundogs remind us that the Heavens are alive with beauty, wonder, and playful light, visible to every heart willing to look up.

September 2025 brought a blood Moon that drew attention across the globe. From Asia to the Americas, the full Moon glowed deep red, hanging like a fiery sentinel in the night sky. To modern eyes, it is a predictable celestial event, caused by Earth’s shadow filtering sunlight across the lunar surface. Yet for countless cultures, a red Moon is never just a natural phenomenon – it is a sign, a warning, a message. Throughout history, blood moons have been linked to omens. Ancient observers saw them as warnings of upheaval, disease, or conflict; some believed they foretold the rise and fall of rulers, shifts in kingdoms, or the turning of fortune itself. In more recent times, mystics and seers have recorded dreams and premonitions tied to blood moons – visions of storms, fires, or strange celestial lights, often coinciding with social or environmental upheaval.

The 2025 eclipse sparked similar fascination. Across continents, people shared stories of unusual dreams and prophetic visions, recalling warnings from past prophets or aligning events with folklore. Some noted that red moons often appeared near periods of change, linking natural rhythms to human events. Others interpreted the glow as a cosmic signal, a reminder that the universe is alive with patterns beyond immediate comprehension. Even today, blood moons continue to weave together science and spirituality. They are a stage where the natural and the mystical meet, a reminder of forces both seen and unseen.

Next, as Typhoon Bualoi carved its path across the Philippines in September 2025, the sky above Calbayog and Samar Island turned a fiery red, a sight that stirred both awe and unease among residents. Many interpreted the brilliant hue as a warning, a celestial “bad omen” lingering in the wake of the storm’s fury. Social media quickly filled with images of the crimson sky, capturing a moment that felt both beautiful and foreboding.

Meteorologists explain the phenomenon through Rayleigh scattering. After the storm, moisture and fine particles remained suspended in the atmosphere. As the Sun rose low on the horizon, shorter blue wavelengths scattered away, allowing red and orange light to dominate the sky. Still, for many who witnessed it, the timing stood out – the storm had passed, yet the sky appeared unusually intense, leaving a strong and lasting impression.

On the morning of December 17, 2025, another rare atmospheric spectacle appeared, this time far from tropical storms, over the skies of the United Kingdom. Parts of central and northern England were enveloped in a soft pink fog, a delicate hue caused by sunlight filtering through low-lying mist. While the sight enchanted locals, it also prompted a yellow weather warning due to poor visibility, affecting travel across the East Midlands and Cambridgeshire.

Meteorologists explained that the pink fog is entirely a natural optical effect. As the Sun rises low on the horizon, shorter blue and green wavelengths are scattered out, leaving the longer red wavelengths to dominate. When filtered through the tiny water droplets of fog, this red light produces a rare, muted pink glow. Experts note that such pink fog is uncommon, requiring a precise balance of fog density, droplet size, and timing at sunrise or sunset – conditions that rarely align, even in Britain’s fog-prone climate.

Reflecting on such unusual atmospheric moments, our Most Beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai (vegan) has shared special insight received from the King of Weather, Who warned that the “world is losing security over weather, losing security over water, losing security over ice-melting...” This message underscores the growing urgency of our time, reminding humanity that the balance of the natural world is becoming increasingly fragile and calls for deeper responsibility, compassion, and care for all life.

From iridescent clouds to Brocken specters, sundogs, blood moons, fiery skies, and pink fog, the Heavens have gifted us rare and wondrous sights. Each phenomenon, whether understood through science or received as a sign, invites us to pause, reflect, and marvel at the majesty of Creation.

These messages from the skies call humanity to live with compassion. By choosing the vegan way of life, we honor God and all Hiers creations, cherishing every living being as sacred. May the beauty above guide our hearts, deepen our empathy, and inspire us to protect the world we share.
