I have a severe weather safety tip for you. Before a storm, turn on weather alerts, prepare an emergency kit, and know where the nearest high ground is. Flash floods can happen fast and without much warning. If you see or hear rapidly rising water, move to higher ground immediately. Trying to evacuate once the water is already rising is extremely risky. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters at all costs. Even shallow, fast-moving water can sweep you off your feet or carry your car away. If you’re caught in a flood, stay where it’s safe and wait for the water to fully recede before attempting to leave. After the storm, keep listening to public officials for updates on which areas and roads are safe. Helping your neighbors, whether it’s during evacuation or with cleanup after the storm, is also one of the most important parts of getting through a disaster together.
