Research from the University of Leicester suggests that just 10 minutes of daily brisk walking can extend your lifespan by a year, and adding an extra 20 minutes could give you even more time. The researchers noted that a 30-minute brisk walk each day might add 1.4 years for women and 2.5 for men. Happiness is key too; smiling and staying positive can be as beneficial for longevity as physical activity. Reading before bed is another great habit— research from a 2016 study in Social Science & Medicine found that avid readers over 50 live about two years longer than those who don’t read. Building social connections, engaging in artistic activities, and nurturing close friendships also contribute to a longer life. Good education can help too: one study, published in the medical journal The Lancet, showed that for every year spent in school, an adult’s risk of death was reduced by two per cent.
